Mum makes "Sarmadakia"
Sarmadakia (from the Turkish verb 'sarma’, which means “to wrap”), dolmadakia, or yaprakakia ( ‘yaprak’ meaning “leaf”) is a traditional Greek dish made from vine leaves stuffed with rice, sometimes meat, and herbs.
My great-grandma taught my grandma how to make them, my grandma taught my mum how to make them, and my mum tried to teach me how to make them while I focused on taking some great photos of her making them so I could make an artwork celebrating this tradition.
I still don’t know how to make sarmadakia, I can find them anywhere in Greece, but the ones that I like the most are my mum’s. She makes them with leaves from our yard. They are the best.
